Facebook Poke: Social Impact from a Feature with no Purpose

The name Facebook was taken from the word paper “face books” of a college. This basically shows the details of the staff members who are the faculty of college students.

As Jeremiah’s friend Kit joined this site first time, there will be many like her who face problems with the poking feature (as till July 2007 the website has over 34million members!)

Poke is a special feature of Facebook having two key features:

    > To attract new friends amongst so many users.

    > To say Hi, Hello or buzz just like Yahoo messenger.

The main feature of poke is the phrases and the templates which depict your emotions and replies from your friend with whom you are talking too. It contains all kinds of emotions, like: angry, happiness, shouting & so on ………….

Secondly, it also means having fun with your group or friends. Here the poke is exchanged back and forth continuously between friends using poke back feature. Users neglecting to return poke while remaining active, are called as loosers.

There is another feature of poke called “X ME”, or superpoke. Well over here, you can replace poke option for other face book members with words of your choice for your friend..Poke should clearly depict what you want to say to your friend. When you poke someone, a poke icon will appear on his or her home page with an option to “remove poke” or “poke back”.

Once a poke is hidden, it’s gone forever. . I believe hiding a poke enables other person to poke you again, which is always a good thing. As said by Melanie Deitch, Facebook Director of Marketing - “Pokes are one of the social utilities offered by Facebook to spur connections among students”.

I think the social networking platforms like Facebook provide us the different ways to interact with our friends and make new friends over the course of our life.

” There’s so much you can do with it. It’s the next big thing. Everything else looks so small infront of it. Every one’s talking about it, there’s a buzz about it. Now, is time that you should join it and explore the world inside it. ” - I told my tech junkie buddy.

Politely he asked, “But man, we guys don’t get the time to do all these things, and after all it is just one of those many things available, I mean there is already so much of fuss about social networking. So why should I join? Just for the heck of it? Or is there something else which might ultimately provide value to me per se or more organization or my environment for that matter.
