Redesign of Facebook

Facebook's new homepage features a login form ...Image via Wikipedia

Facebook had announced it was working on a redesign earlier this year. In May, an idea of the redesigned was released to developers. But surely, now it’s easier to understand what’s going on with the people you have been linked to. The three main features called filters, stream and publisher makes it lot easier to use and user friendly. Filters make sure that the user stay updated on what the friends they are linked are posting.

The user can also create their own filters using Friend Lists. The user can also filter by applications, like Photos, videos etc. The other attraction is called stream. The stream shows the user all the posts from his friends in real-time. This keeps them up to date on everything that’s happening. User can also control who appears there. Next is Publisher. By using this user can publish his status, photos, notes and more into the stream. Posts show up both in the user’s profile, and on his friends’ home pages. The publisher lets the user to share his thoughts and content like photos and notes into the stream. The user can have one stream on the Wall on the profile, and one stream on the home page that represents the on-going, flowing conversation between him and his friends.

The focus seems to be on getting the information in real time, the ability to easily filter the information displayed, and making it easier to post links, photos and videos. The other changes in the redesign are like new menu Bar, mini-Feed and wall are now under the wall tab, a new “Bio” box, complete rearrangement of tabs for user’s wall, info, photos, and apps, Facebook Apps are now found in the “Boxes” tab, users can add extra tabs and user can user his webcam to take a photo or record a video to add to his collection or post on the Wall of his friends or relatives.

Social Chat Application

KickApps CorporationImage via WikipediaSocial Chat application connects the user to a server. This server provides the user the group of people in a room. This is a good way to connect different people of different communities and different ideology. KickApps, which powers facebook, provides Userplane to enable their users to add chat and instant messaging. Users of facebook can access chat and IM.  Users can enable the functionality from the affiliate center by checking the Chat/IM box.

Chat then appears in the top navigation. The IM pops up. Extending the Facebook platform, Social.IM turns user’s Facebook friends, colleagues and acquaintances into IM contacts on the desktop. Social.IM today announced that it has gained significant traction with the Facebook community in just one month since its initial beta launch.

Social.IM users are highly engaged, with over half using the product every day, and have exchanged over one million messages since launch. The growth in Social.IM members and conversations can be attributed to strong member word-of-mouth about the application and its software availability for Windows, Mac, and Linux users. In its growing popularity, Facebook is a constant in the lives of users and their friends, irrespective of what e-mail, or IM, service you use. But the Facebook experience is still not real-time. It is still a series of back and forth interactions, rather than an ongoing conversation. Social.IM changes all of that by bringing Facebook to the desktop for an always-on connection to your Facebook world.

The new Facebook friends are automatically integrated into your Social.IM buddy list. It is also capable of identifying when the Facebook friends are available, busy or offline. The users are also notified when they get new pokes, friend requests, or messages and when their friends update their status or write on the user’s wall. This makes the things much easier for the users.

Hackers Selling Facebook Account Details

Facebook's new homepage features a login form ...Image via WikipediaThe hottest news of this month is that the cyber thieves are stealing the account entry details from users before selling them on to gangs behind online fraud who in turn send viruses to other computer users. These gangs send “spam” messages on to millions of other computer  users, urging people to click on false video or photo links. By clicking on the links, people’s computers become infected with spyware viruses that can track keystrokes and copy details such as passwords to online bank accounts. Other profiles being sought by the gangs include login details for MySpace and internet phone company Skype. Hackers are stealing Facebook log-ins and profiles and selling them on to criminal gangs for just 89p each, a report has revealed.

The infected accounts can then be used to to send spam messages - usually disguised as links to video clips or photos from family and friends - on to millions of other users. Log-ins for MySpace, Skype and online computer games are also sold on to gangs for £1 a time, according to research by security experts Trend Micro. A set of credit card details is sold for £25 while internet banking log-ons cost £35 each. The scam works by a victim clicking on a spam link that appears to be coming from one of their Facebook friends or someone in their address book which lodges spyware in their machine. This then records all the information, including passwords, when they log in to various sites. The passwords can then be sent on to money-laundering gangs who use them to infiltrate users’ bank accounts.
Computer security firm McAfee revealed that Facebook users were being hit by a virus called ‘Koobface’ which seeks out sensitive details such as credit card numbers.Koobface spreads by sending notes to friends of someone whose PC has been infected.

The messages, with subject headers like, ‘You look just awesome in this new movie,’ direct recipients to a website where they are asked to download what it claims is an update of Adobe Systems Inc’s Flash player. If the users download the software, users end up with an infected computer, which then takes users to contaminated sites when they try to use search engines from Google, Yahoo, MSN and Live.com, according McAfee. So this is a request to the users and members to delete contaminated e-mails and has posted directions at www.facebook.com/security on how to clean infected computers.
